Why 2015 May (finally) Be the Year of Mobile Payments

The promise of ubiquitous mobile payments has been on the horizon for years, but actual usage has been slow to take off in the US and Europe. When TechRader’s David Nield wrote about “the year of mobile payments” finally arriving, the company that figures most prominently in his article is Zapp, a UK firm that puts near real-time payments on people’s mobile phones through their existing mobile banking application. Zapp is backed by some of the largest financial services companies and retailers and, if Nield is correct, may finally lead the grand debut of the mass adoption of mobile payments.

Samsung Pay Will be Huge Driver for Mobile Payment Adoption

MasterCard Launches New P2P Payments Service

As a slew of companies from an expanding array of industries enter the P2P payments space, MasterCard today launched a P2P payments and disbursement service called MasterCard Send, a personal payments service that allows consumers to send funds domestically and internationally. According to the company, a single connection to the MasterCard Send platform allows businesses, merchants, governments, non-profits, issuers and others to send money to consumers whether they are banked or unbanked, and located domestically or abroad.

NCR’s Aloha POS to Integrate with “Pay with OpenTable” Mobile Payment Solution for Restaurants

Danske Bank Partners with Powa Technologies for International Mobile Shopping

Danske Bank has partnered up with British company Powa Technologies to bring Mobile Pay users instant access to its mobile commerce platform PowaTag. The ambition of the company is to offer consumers all over the world easy access to mobile shopping with a variety of triggers. Until now, the company has signed agreements with more than 1,200 brands and chains, such as Best Western, OVS, Miinto and PWT Group.

Gemalto Wristband Used in Pilot Project for Tap Payments at Sporting Event / Public Transit

What is Needed for Bluetooth Beacons to Incorporate Mobile Payments?

Beacons — those little ad-beaming mechanisms littering storefronts today — have been heralded as the ultimate mobile app partner for retailers. But as they exist today, they do little more than make Madison Avenue come-ons, teasing shoppers with discounts and offers that the beacons (and even the beacons in conjunction with mobile apps) can’t deliver. How can this loop be closed? Can beacons directly process payments? Unlikely, but indirect payments are all but a certainty, although that’s at least a couple of years away.

Trader Joe’s to Accept Apple Pay

Kiosks at Trader Joe’s checkout counters across the U.S. have been seeing upgrades in recent weeks and months to VeriFone touchscreen machines. Some of these payment terminals already advertise that they accept Apple Pay, as seen above at a store in Raleigh, spotted by AppleInsider.Not all stores have yet enabled support for Apple Pay, even if the new VeriFone terminals are installed. For example, a trip Friday afternoon to the Trader Joe’s in Brooklyn revealed that Apple Pay is not yet being accepted, and a check-out clerk mentioned that support is forthcoming at an unknown date.
